Actually, further testing shows that now I files of smaller sizes that are failing in a similar fashion. Now jconsole shows a continually growsing number of worker threads; all getting stuck in various locations in the code related to the SSLEngine.unwrap() method.
So, I am still without a short term solution to my problem. Argh!
