File system permissions for application editing

We have an application that uses a few XML files for configuration and other data needs. The problem is that with the way I have Glassfish running, as root, using Sun SMF, the application gets deployed as the root user and group. Thus, once deployed, developers cannot then edit any of the configuration files or data files.

Is there a way to deploy while preserving file permissions or some other general practice people use to allow these kinds of edits. It's possible that in the early phases, we may be redeploying often and I don't want to have to go in every time and change the permissions to allow devs to edit files. I'd rather give them the ability to drop the WAR in autodeploy and edit as they wish.
