We had the same problem on one of our Redhat 5 server. After reading https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2008-0519.html, and the issue with gettimeofday, we finally patched to OS and the problem seems to have disappeared since then. But I don't know if you are running Redhat and if this helps...
