Meanwhile I found a way to work around it: I do not use sun-application-client.xml at all but just use <ejb-link>MyEjbJar.jar#MySessionBean</ejb-link>, which works pretty well and is way easier than using the additional sun-application-client.xml.
Anyways, it would be good to point out in the GlassFish documentation what the correct way is like, because the current documentation seems to be incorrect -- at least it lead to this lenghty thread.
