You can start it from a script in /etc/init.d. Most Linux distros have
some kind of skeleton file in that directory that you can base a new
script on. If you follow the conventions in the skeleton, your script
should show up in "service" or "runlevel" tools, so you can set it to
start automatically.
I've attached one I did for Ubuntu; suggestions for improvement are
welcome.
