Yes, you should see your System.out.println() from your application in server.log. I use this quite often. You shouldn't need to do/configure anything for this.
Attached is a small war file for you test. You should be able to deploy this war and when run it, the System.out.println() msg will show in server.log.
Also attached the java file.
