I am not sure where you are on this issue but what I ment was that you must access the collection itself not just the getter to have the lazy loading occur. But if you are translating the collection then I would expect it to be triggered.
If you can create small reproduction and send it to the persistence mailing list (rename your .zip file to a .jar) someone will be able to take a look at it for you.
