the SMF was just an example. What I really wanted was how do I write plugins (not JavaEE components) for Glassfish like for example if I want to implement a new container or an option to specify a WAR file is to be deployed in a new container.

Any tutorial or pointers appreciated. Also if you can point me to some Javadoc. I found Manveen's blog about writing updates (http://weblogs.java.net/blog/manveen/archive/2007/06/creating_a_glas_1.html) but the blog does not say how to write Glassfish plugin.
