HA (High availaibility) requirements in glassfish

We are trying to use HA in glassfish and had a question on some of the requirements. It is not clear whether HA (in-memory persistence etc) of the HTTP session state or of stateful session beans requires the classes to be serializable (implement the java.io.serializable interface). Is this a necessary requirement or does HA work out of the box and any class can be failed over using in-memory persistence. This is important as it has a bearing on whether we need to change code to use HA. I hope I am clear.
