For the unmarshall scenario would the following work?
public void afterUnmarshal(Unmarshaller u, Object parent) {
if (parent instanceof MyObject)
this.myObject = (MyObject)parent;
else if (parent instanceof MyOtherObject)
this.myOtherObject = (MyOtherObject)parent;

I think an effective, portable strategy is to use @XmlTransient and
Marshal event callbacks (beforeMarshal & afterMarshal).
