Figured it out.
I had a block of text copied from elsewhere that had an illegal character in it (one of those angled single quotes, instead of the straight ones). When I took it out, the problem stopped.
Apologies to glassfish for suspecting it : )
Still, quite odd that the angled quote resulted in an incomplete page....
