I didn't realize someone had responded to this question, so I apologize for the slow reply. At the time of this post I was injecting an EntityManager and not an EntityManagerFactory into my application client.
I noticed Marina's reply about an hour ago and updated my code as suggested. Everything is now working how I would like / expect.
