I deleted the persistence.xml and created a new one with the different provider. The xml is as generated by NetBeans when creating the persistence unit. I have my ear bundled with the hibernate jars when using hibernate.
When I set a target for the resource Hibernate started working. Just funny how it always worked with TopLink and needed this change to get Hibernate to deploy.
