I would say the combination of the book and the docs is most helpful. (plus forum)

The GF docs can be terse. No doubt accurate, but terse.

The GF book is better at presenting a 'Hello World' approach to getting up to speed. With screen shots and sample code, it seems to present an easier to follow cookbook approach.

And, I really enjoy having a publication I can put 'stickies' in, scribble notes and highlight stuff for later. Works better as a reference that way. But thats just a personal preference thing.

It takes lots more than just the GF book to do more than the basics. But, sometimes it's nice to get the basics working first. I think the book could eliminate numerous newbie issues.
