For some reason, no matter what configuration I use for Id generation I get an exception:

Exception Description: SEQ_GEN_SEQUENCE: platform HSQLPlatform doesn't support NativeSequence.

Booth with IDENTITY and SEQUENCE.

Also, since HSQL 1.7 (I believe) HSQL has supported sequences.

So, why isn't it working with HSQL?
