Yea, this is ultimately what I ended up doing and I got it working now.

I would be fine with this approach, except for the fact that anytime I make any change to the EJB logic I have to copy it back into the lib directory and reload the application server. Not fun. Oh well, it's the only approach that will work if I wish to have a listener actively listening for SNMP information whenever the application server is started up.
