You are running against Tomcat, how are you acquiring the EntityManagerFactory? What does your configuration look like? Are you setting the toplink.weaving property? Have you configured the TopLink agent? Have you tried running the static weaver? (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/toplink/JPA/essentials/toplink-jpa-extensions.html#LazyLoading)
