Thanks for you post + apologies for the late reply. Here's an example hosts file:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.7.30 vm-gbx-app1.domain.com vm-gbx-app1
192.168.7.31 vm-gbx-app2.domain.com vm-gbx-app2
192.168.7.32 vm-gbx-app3.domain.com vm-gbx-app3
192.168.7.33 vm-gbx-app4.domain.com vm-gbx-app4

We've seen some funny business with 8.1ee and RHEL hosts files, but usually around install/node agent creation time. Everything's pinging as you'd expect. Still stumped here...
