JMS Q managed by user code or container in servlets

What is the feeling about the user code in a servlet managing the
connection to a jms queue vs delegating it to the servlet container.

I have some code which tries to manage the connection but depending on
where the Q is init'ed it fails.

i.e. if the Q is init'ed in the constructor it fails to connect.
if the Q is init'ed in a lazy fashion, when client makes a call for
the first time to use the Q, it works.

thanks

Peter
