I did not use Rails. The only unusual parts of my applications are (1)
use of the PHP/Java bridge for running Moodle and (2) a custom app
that makes a blocking call to Runtime.exec (not a great practice, I
know) when students submit homework for grading. I have maybe 50
simultaneous users.
