Were you trying to play the role of an admin that would install the
product in a generally accessible area such that other users could run
its commands and use it?

I think the problem below with the permission denied messages concerning
.updatetool/ might be a result of the ~/.updatetool/ directory being
owned by root rather than the user that owns the home directory in which
this directory resides. When your non-root user starts the desktop
session, it can't access the root owned ~/.updatetool/ content. The
desktop notifier attempts to start when you log into your desktop. That
startup might have triggered these error messages.
