1) You absolutely can "downgrade" to XP. In fact, Dell is still
shipping PCs with XP (plus Vista) if you pay a little extra or get the
right deal/package.
2) I am still running XP but several coworkers are running Vista. I am
not aware of any specific incompatibilities for Java developers on
Vista.
Hopefully someone who is currently using Vista can chime in with
personal experiences, especially negative ones...
