Configuration Management
Introduction
Configuration Management (CM) is a discipline providing technical and organisational
directions and monitoring for the whole process from product development to
the later stages like maintenance and service.

CM is the approach to enable compliance with standard engineering practices,
such as:
- Controlling documents and engineering data to ensure that only one, correct
version of the information being viewed is registered, tagged and classified
appropriately; and,
- Complying with Department of Defence (DoD) ordinances that state that the
only acceptable method for delivery of design data is via compliance to MIL-STD-2549,
Configuration Management Data Interface and its successor, EIA-836, Industry
Consensus Standards for Data Interoperability and Configuration.
CM is structured into
- Configuration Identification
- Configuration Control
- Configuration Status Accounting
- Configuration Auditing.
Oracle's Agile EDM solution including CM allows engineering data to be used
throughout the extended enterprise to improve the operational efficiencies of
the product development process, enabling organizations to focus on innovative
product design, participate in collaborative product development, and ensure
precision manufacture of quality complex products.
