Security vulnerability in the Solaris Pseudo-terminal driver (pty(7D)) may cause a system panic:

1. Impact

A race condition security vulnerability in the Solaris pseudo-terminal driver (pty(7D)) module may allow a local unprivileged user to panic the system causing a Denial of Service (DoS).

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Solaris 8 without patch 113685-07
  • Solaris 9 without patch 140426-01
  • Solaris 10 without patch 140383-01
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 through snv_102
x86 Platform
  • Solaris 8 without patch 113686-06
  • Solaris 9 without patch 140427-01
  • Solaris 10 without patch 140384-01
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_01 through snv_102
Note: OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above and beyond the build from which it was derived.  To determine the base build of OpenSolaris, the following command can be used:
    $ uname -v
snv_86
3. Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, the system will panic with a stack trace similar to the following:
    panic: BAD TRAP: occurred in module "unix" due to a NULL pointer dereference
unix:die()
unix:trap()
unix:ktl0()
unix:putnext()
genunix:strdoioctl()
genunix:strioctl()
ptc:ptcioctl()
genunix:fop_ioctl()
genunix:ioctl()
4. Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution section below.

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

  • Solaris 8 with patch 113685-07 or later
  • Solaris 9 with patch 140426-01 or later
  • Solaris 10 with patch 140383-01 or later
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_103 or later
x86 Platform
  • Solaris 8 with patch 113686-06 or later
  • Solaris 9 with patch 140427-01 or later
  • Solaris 10 with patch 140384-01 or later
