A Security Vulnerability in the Solaris snmpXdmid(1M) may lead to a Denial of Service (DoS) condition

1. Impact

A security vulnerability in the Sun Solstice Enterprise SNMP-DMI mapper subagent daemon (snmpXdmid(1M)) running on Solaris may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to kill the daemon process by sending malformed packets. This is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

Sun acknowledges, with thanks, IBM Internet Security Systems X-Force (http://xforce.iss.net) for bringing this issue to our attention.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform:
  • Solaris 8 without patch 108869-35
  • Solaris 9 without patch 137402-01
  • Solaris 10 without patch 128415-01
x86 Platform:
  • Solaris 8 without patch 108870-35
  • Solaris 9 without patch 137403-01
  • Solaris 10 without patch 128416-01
Note: Only systems that have the SUNWsadmi package installed and have DMI service enabled are impacted by this issue.

To determine if the package is installed on the system, the following command can be run:
$ pkginfo SUNWsadmi
system     Solstice Enterprise Agents 1.0.3 Desktop Management Interface
To determine if snmpXdmi is enabled on a system, the following command can be run:

On Solaris 10:
$ svcs svc:/application/management/dmi:default
On Solaris 8 and 9:
$ ps -aef | grep snmpXdmid
root  1658     1   0 15:47:05 ?   0:00 /usr/lib/dmi/snmpXdmid
-s <hostname>
The above output indicates that the SUNWsadmi package is installed on the system and the DMI service is enabled.

3. Symptoms

Should the described issue occur, snmpXdmid will core dump.  The pstack output of the core file will appear similar to the following:
core 'core' of 362:     /usr/lib/dmi/snmpXdmid -s <hostname>
