You can customize your Oracle configuration by changing the configuration
parameter values. This appendix provides information about these parameters.
The configuration parameters control such things as the name and location
of the program executable, library and help files. The parameters can also
determine the driver to be used for network communications and the values
that the network software should use for its operating parameters.
When you use the installer, it creates entries for the Oracle products
in the Windows Registry, which stores configuration details for all the
Windows products installed on the workstation.
on the Oracle Designer and Oracle Designer Repository product CD. You can edit
and then run this file to insert its contents into the Registry (for example,
if your Registry becomes corrupted).
Caution:
Running the ORACLE.REG file (e.g. from Windows Explorer)
will overwrite your Registry entries for Designer or Designer Repository with the contents
of the file. See "Inserting the Contents
of a Registry File".
Modifying the Windows Registry
You can view or edit the configuration details for the Oracle products
by using the Registry Editor.
Using the Registry Editor
Starting the Registry Editor
To start the Registry Editor:
Click the Start bar, then click Run.
In the Run dialog box, type REGEDIT in the Open field.
Details for the Oracle products appear in the Registry Editor window named
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Double-click the word SOFTWARE, then click the word
ORACLE. The general parameters for Oracle products are displayed. Click
any of the names under ORACLE to see the configuration parameters for that
area of the installation.
Adding a New Parameter
To add a new parameter to the Registry (for example, to add a LOCAL parameter
if one does not exist), proceed as follows:
Click the area of the Registry where you want to add the new parameter.
For example, to add a LOCAL parameter, click the word ORACLE.
Choose Edit > New > String Value.
Overtype the dummy name with the parameter name (for example, LOCAL) that
you want to add and press ENTER.
Double-click the new parameter name.
In the Edit String dialog box, type the parameter value in the Value Data
field and click OK.
The new values take effect immediately.
Editing an Existing Parameter
To change the value of a parameter that already exists in the Registry,
proceed as follows:
Click the area of the Registry where you want to edit the existing parameter.
For example, to edit the LOCAL parameter, click the word ORACLE.
On the list of parameters displayed, double-click the name of the parameter
you want to edit.
In the Edit String dialog box, edit the value in the Value Data field as
required and click OK.
The new value takes effect immediately.
Inserting
the Contents of a Registry File
You can modify the Registry by inserting the contents of a registry file,
that is, a file containing Registry entries in the correct format.
Caution:
Use this method with care, as the original contents of
the registry will be completely overwritten.
Command Line Method
Click the Start bar, then click Run.
In the Open field of the Run dialog box, enter:
REGEDIT filename
where filename is the name of the registry file.
Mouse Method
From Windows Explorer, double-click the entry for the registry file.
