Update Tool manages the installations of Enterprise Server software components that are contained under a single file system directory on your system.
The Administration Console version of Update Tool allows you to do the following:
Install add-on components
View updates to installed components
View installed components
To update or remove installed components, you must stop the Enterprise Server domain, then use one of the following commands:
as-install-parent/bin/updatetool, which starts the Update Tool graphical utility
as-install-parent/bin/pkg, a command-line version of the Update Tool
The key concepts for Update Tool are described in the sections that follow.
A component is the installable unit that Update Tool manages. A component consists of files that are installed as a unit on your system within an installation image.
An installation image is the directory that contains the software components, including the content of the directory. The installation image is added to Update Tool as the result of downloading and installing Enterprise Server software. To enable the addition and update of Enterprise Server software components, each installation image contains information about the installation of components.
A network repository contains the following items:
Components that can be added to an installation image
Updates to existing components in an installation image
An installation image is associated with one or more network repositories. Each network repository is represented by a name and an associated URL. A repository name is unique for each installation image, and represents both the organization or project that manages the repository and a well defined scope of content.
An add-on component is a component of the installation image that is not yet installed.
