This illustration of the gateway architecture is adequately described in the "Gateway Architecture" section of the chapter, which is presented just before the figure.

The Client is shown connecting to an Oracle database server by means of either Oracle Net or a local connection.

The Oracle database server connects by means of either Oracle Net or a local connection to the gateway (TG4DB2/400) instance.

The gateway instance is connected to a DB2/400 database.
