Oracle9i Online Generic Documentation CD-ROM Installation and Usage Notes Release 9.0.1 |
|
This CD contains the online generic documentation library for Oracle9i, Release 1 (9.0.1). The generic library includes those manuals which are not specific to a particular platform. Installation guides and other platform-specific manuals can be found on the corresponding product software CD.
The documentation on this CD is available in HTML and PDF formats. Some manuals are available in PDF only, but their full contents are included in another manual which is available in HTML.
This document describes the contents of the Oracle9i documentation library and provides instructions for installing and viewing the documentation.
This CD is a Rock Ridge/Joliet/ISO9660 hybrid CD, which should be readable by all computers which support one of these standards.
Beginning with Release 1 (9.0.1), the generic documentation library CD includes a new HTML interface not available in previous releases. For more information about how to use this interface, please click the Help link on the top-level index.htm
page. Some information is also provided in this document in the section "Viewing Documentation".
For information about new features in Oracle9i, refer to the online manual Oracle9i Database New Features.
This CD contains all of the the documentation listed in Table 1. Each title is followed by the part number of the manual.
Some manuals in the library have not been updated for this release. The header at the top of each HTML page indicates the most recent revision for that document, as does the title page of each PDF file.
You can install the documentation on your local system, or you can read the files directly from the CD without installing them. You need one of the tools listed in Table 2 to view the documentation from either location.
Acrobat Reader is available as a free download from the Adobe Web site for the following platforms: Mac OS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 3.1x, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Sun Solaris SPARC, Sun Solaris x86, Digital UNIX, HP-UX, IBM AIX, SGI IRIX, Linux, DEC OSF/1 and OS/2 Warp. The Adobe website is located at
http://www.adobe.com/
The disk space requirements for installing the online documentation are listed in Table 3.
Format | Disk Space Required for Installation |

You can view the documentation on this CD directly from the CD, or you can install it on a local system. You can install the documents from this CD onto your local system in either of the following ways:
The simplest installation method is a direct file copy from the CD to your local system. Use your operating system's commands to copy the contents of the DOC
directory on the CD to the appropriate installation directory on your system.
Refer to the Oracle9i Installation Guide for your platform for instructions on how to install and launch the Oracle Universal Installer.
When the installer prompts you to select a product to install, navigate to the Installation CD and locate the file
/INSTALL/docs_901.jar
Use this file as the basis for your installation. The Installer will guide you through the rest of the installation process.
The location of the installed documentation files is determined according to the following rules:
ORACLE_DOC
is defined in the environment, then the files are installed in that directory. Note that the summary screen of the Installer shows your ORACLE_HOME
path as the installation destination, but the documentation will be installed in $ORACLE_DOC
.
ORACLE_DOC
is not defined, but ORACLE_BASE
is defined, the files are installed under the $ORACLE_BASE/doc
directory. Note that the summary screen of the Installer shows your ORACLE_HOME
path as the installation destination, but the documentation will be installed in $ORACLE_BASE/doc
.
ORACLE_DOC
nor ORACLE_BASE
is defined in the environment, the files are installed under the $ORACLE_HOME/doc
directory.
To view the HTML and PDF documentation from a local installation or from the CD, follow these steps:
index.htm
file within the installed documentation directory or within the /DOC
directory on the CD.
index.htm
file for further assistance in using the features of the documentation library interface.
In order to use the dynamic features of the documentation library, including the keyword search and virtual book, you must have a connection to the Internet that enables you to access the Oracle Corporation website. You may also be required to enter a valid login name/password for the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). You can obtain a free OTN account by visiting
Note:
http://technet.oracle.com/admin/account/membership.html
index.htm
page. You can then click the PDF link corresponding to the book you wish to view.
It is possible to view the PDF documentation without using a Web browser. To do so, follow these steps:
/DOC/index.pdf
on the CD. This file contains a list of PDF documents available in the library. Each book title is also a link to the PDF file for that document.
Alternately, you can skip the index.pdf
file and navigate directly to the book you wish to view. PDF files are named for the part number of the manual (for example, a12345.pdf
). A list of the part numbers is available in the section "CD-ROM Contents and Documentation Part Numbers". PDF files are located within the following directories:
/DOC/mix.901
for the Master Index and Master Glossary
/DOC/server.901
for Server, SQL*Plus, and Data Guard documentation
/DOC/network.901
for Directory, Networking, and Security documentation
/DOC/rac.901
for Real Application Clusters documentation
/DOC/appdev.901
for Application Development, interMedia, Spatial, Dynamic Services, and Syndication Server documentation
/DOC/java.901
for Java development documentation
/DOC/text.901
for Oracle Text documentation
/DOC/olap.901
for Oracle OLAP Services documentation
/DOC/em.901
for Oracle Enterprise Manager documentation
/DOC/workflow.901
for Oracle Workflow documentation
/DOC/ifs.901
for Oracle Internet File System documentation
/DOC/ultra.901
for Oracle Ultra Search documentation
For example, to view the Oracle9i SQL Reference directly, without using a browser, you would first look up the category and part number of the document in Table 1. That manual is in the "Server, SQL*Plus, and Data Guard" category, and the part number is a90125. You would then open the /DOC/server.901/a90125.pdf
file on your CD, or the corresponding file in your installed documentation.

Our goal is to make Oracle products, services, and supporting documentation accessible, with good usability, to the disabled community. To that end, our documentation includes features that make information available to users of assistive technology. All of the information is available in HTML format, and, with the exception of those manuals noted below, it contains markup to facilitate access by the disabled community. Standards will continue to evolve over time, and Oracle is actively engaged with other market-leading technology vendors to address technical obstacles so that our documentation can be accessible to all of our customers. For additional information, visit the Oracle Accessibility Program Web site at:
http://www.oracle.com/accessibility/
Note that the documentation for the Oracle Internet File System included in this library is from an earlier version of the product, produced prior to the release of the Section 508 accessibility standards. This documentation is all available in HTML format, but it may not contain the accessibility enhancements present in the other manuals. If you need assistance with this documentation, then please send e-mail to ifsdocs_us@oracle.com
. Note also that while the manuals with part numbers a88882 through a88888 are listed as being available only in PDF format, all of the information contained in those manuals is present in the HTML version of the manual with part number a88879.
JAWS, a Windows screen reader, may not always correctly read the code examples in this documentation. The conventions for writing code require that closing braces should appear on an otherwise empty line; however, JAWS may not always read a line of text that consists solely of a bracket or brace.
