Overview of Changes Made for P6 Professional R8.x Releases

For legacy users of Primavera P6 Professional, you will notice many changes when upgrading from 7.0 or earlier to an R8.x release. The following lists changes to be aware of when upgrading to any P6 Professional R8.x release.

Note: The R8.x series for the P6 Professional discussed in this document begins with R8.1. There is no P6 Professional R8.0 (for standalone or workgroups), as discussed next.

P6 Professional Changes

P6 Professional Project Management (P6 Professional) continues to be a separate product that can work standalone or for workgroups (see below for guidelines). However, there is no P6 Professional R8.0 available as its own product. Starting with R8.1, P6 Professional no longer connects to the P6 EPPM database. If you are using P6 EPPM, P6 Professional supports your offline needs. You can use import and export to move projects between the P6 EPPM and P6 Professional databases.

The Windows client that connects directly to P6 EPPM is now part of the P6 EPPM product suite and is called the P6 Optional Client in R8.1 and P6 Professional in R8.0.

The following table is intended to clarify the product names:

Changes in Supporting Tasks/Modules

In P6 Professional R8.x, Methodology Management and Project Architect have been removed. Since Project Architect has been removed, you will need to convert your methodologies to projects before you upgrade.

Integration API is no longer available, but you can use SDK.

P6 Progress Reporter, P6 Web Access, ProjectLink, and MSP-managed projects are no longer available.

The summarizer for P6 Professional R8.x uses completely new database tables that are incompatible with the old database summary tables. Migrating to P6 Professional R8.x causes all existing summary data to be deleted. So immediately after migrating to P6 Professional R8.x, you must resummarize all your existing projects that were previously summarized. You resummarize these projects by choosing Tools, Summarize.

Summary only projects for P6 Professional R8.x are no longer supported. If you have existing summary only projects for which you want to retain data, then either before or after migrating to P6 Professional R8.x you must import the project from Microsoft Project (MSP) and then summarize the imported project in P6 Professional.

Industry type, which determines the terminology and default settings that display in P6 Professional, is now set using Admin Preferences, Industry Type tab instead of local to each machine.

Not all Risks fields map one-to-one during upgrade; some will migrate to text fields.
