Oracle8i On-Line Generic Documentation CD-ROM Installation and Usage Notes

Welcome to the Oracle8i Documentation Library on CD-ROM

This CD-ROM contains the on-line generic documentation library for Oracle8i, Release 2. You will also see the release number referred to as "Release 8.1.6" in this document and in some of the generic documentation. The two release designations are equivalent, and in some places this release is referred to as "Release 2 (8.1.6)".

The documentation on this CD-ROM is available in HTML and PDF formats. This document describes the contents of the CD-ROM and provides instructions for installing and viewing the documentation. It also includes information about ordering hardcopy documentation and contacting customer support.

This CD-ROM is a Rock Ridge/Joliet/ISO9660 hybrid CD, which should be readable by all computers which support one of those standards.

For information about new features in this release, see the on-line manual Getting to Know Oracle8i.

This document includes the following sections:

CD-ROM Contents and Documentation Part Numbers

This CD-ROM contains all of the the documentation listed in the tables in this section. Each title is preceded by the part number of the manual.

Some manuals which include multiple printed volumes (such as Oracle8i Concepts or Oracle8i SQL Reference) are presented as a single manual in on-line form. The part number included here refers to the multi-volume set.

The documentation on the CD-ROM is divided into the following top-level categories:

The final item in the list (the Installation and Usage Notes) is equivalent to this document. It is provided on the CD-ROM in HTML, PDF, and text formats.

Some of the documentation categories are further divided into subcategories. For example, the "Server and Data Warehousing" category is subdivided into the following subcategories: "Concepts, Administration, and Reference," "Backup and Recovery," "Data Warehousing," and "Distributed Databases."

If an asterisk (*) follows a part number in one of the following tables, this indicates that the document in question has not been updated for this release, so the manual on this CD-ROM is the Release 8.1.5 version.

If a double asterisk (**) follows a part number in one of the following tables, this indicates that the documented product is in maintenance mode (bug fixes only) and the documentation on this CD has not been updated. The version provided here is the most recently released version:

If a part number is enclosed in square brackets ([ ]), this indicates that this is an online-only document (HTML and/or PDF) which is not available as a hard-copy manual.

The following tables list all the documentation on this CD.

Tools Requirements

You may choose to install the documentation onto your local system, or you can read the files directly from the CD-ROM without installing them. You need one of the tools listed in the following table to view the documentation from either location.

Table 1-1 Minimum Tools Requirements for Viewing Documentation
On-Line Format  Requires

HTML viewing

Netscape Navigator 3.0 (or higher)
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 (or higher)

PDF viewing

Acrobat Reader 3.0 (or higher)

Installing Documentation

You can install the documents on this CD-ROM in either of two ways:

  1. By copying the files from the CD-ROM to your local system.

  2. By using the Oracle Universal Installer included with your Release 8.1.6 software distribution, which provides a GUI interface for installation.

Note: The installation components on this CD-ROM are not compatible with pre-Oracle8i versions of the Oracle Installer. You must use the Oracle Universal Installer, which is new with Oracle8i.

File Copy Installation

The simplest installation method is a direct file copy from the CD-ROM to your local system. Use your operating system's commands to copy the contents of the DOC directory on the CD-ROM to the appropriate installation directory on your system.

Installing With the Oracle Universal Installer

See the Oracle8i Installation Guide for your platform for instructions on how to install and launch the Oracle Universal Installer.

When the installer prompts you to select a product to install, navigate to the CD-ROM and locate the file /INSTALL/docs_816.jar. Use this file as the basis for your installation.

The location of the installed documentation files is determined according to the following rules:

Viewing Documentation

You can install the documentation on this CD-ROM onto your local system, or you can view the documentation directly from the CD-ROM. See "Tools Requirements" for information about the tools necessary to view the documentation.

The Oracle Information Navigator (OIN) is a Java Applet which is provided both on the CD-ROM and as part of the installed documentation. It provides a "tree" view of the documentation library for random file access and allows you to perform searches across the library. For more information on using OIN, see "Using the Oracle Information Navigator (OIN)".

To view the HTML and PDF documentation from a local installation or from the CD-ROM, follow these steps:

  1. Use your browser to open the top-level index.htm file within the installed documentation directory, or within the /DOC directory on the CD-ROM.

Note: If you do not wish to launch the Information Navigator Java applet, open the file products.htm instead of index.htm.

  2. Click on the category of documentation you wish to view (Server and Data Warehousing, Application Development, Networking and Security, Parallel Server, interMedia, Java, or WebDB).

  3. On the resulting product-level index file, click on the HTML or PDF link corresponding to the book you wish to view. Clicking the HTML link takes you to the table of contents for that book; clicking the PDF link displays the appropriate document using your installed Acrobat products or your browser's Acrobat plug-in.

Note: The "PDF Directory" bookmark at the top of each manual's PDF bookmark list is only valid if you have opened the file directly, using Acrobat, or have navigated to it using the PDF index. See "Viewing PDF Documentation Without a Browser" for more information.

Using the Oracle Information Navigator (OIN)

You can randomly access files in the documentation library using the Oracle Information Navigator's "tree" view. You can also use the OIN's search capabilities to search through the documentation library . The OIN requires a frames-enabled, Java-enabled web browser. To start using the Information Navigator, point your browser to:

When you open one of these pages in your browser, the OIN applet loads, and the OIN utility displays in a separate window. If the OIN window is not visible after loading, it may be behind the main browser window.

For information on how to use the Information Navigator, click on the Help button in the Information Navigator window. The help screens display in the main browser window.

Viewing PDF Documentation Without a Browser

It is possible to view the PDF documentation without using a web browser. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Open Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Exchange.

  2. Choose the File > Open menu option.

  3. In the resulting dialog navigate to the /DOC/index.pdf file on the CD-ROM, or the top-level index.pdf file in your installed documentation. From this index file you can navigate to all of the PDF documentation on the CD-ROM. Each of the PDF files also contains a "PDF Directory" bookmark at the top of the bookmark list. Clicking on this bookmark takes you up one level in the PDF index hierarchy.

The documentation in the PDF index files is divided into the same categories as the HTML documentation. See "CD-ROM Contents and Documentation Part Numbers" for information about the different categories.

You can also open an individual PDF file directly without browsing through the PDF index pages. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Open Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Exchange.

  2. Choose the File > Open menu option.

  3. In the resulting dialog navigate to the file you wish to view, select it, and click the Open button. PDF files are named for the part number of the manual (e.g., a12345.pdf). A list of the part numbers is available in the section "CD-ROM Contents and Documentation Part Numbers". PDF files are located within the following directories:

    On the CD-ROM:

    • /DOC/mix.816 for the Master Index

    • /DOC/server.816 for Server and Data Warehousing documentation

    • /DOC/appdev.816 for Application Development documentation

    • /DOC/network.816 for Networking and Security documentation

    • /DOC/paraserv.816 for Parallel Server documentation

    • /DOC/sqlplus.816 for SQL*Plus documentation

    • /DOC/inter.816 for interMedia, Spatial, Time Series and Visual Information Retrieval documentation

    • /DOC/java.816 for Java documentation

    • /DOC/webdb.816 for WebDB documentation

    Installed on your local system:

    • $ORACLE_DOC/mix.816 for the Master Index

    • $ORACLE_DOC/server.816 for Server and Data Warehousing documentation

    • $ORACLE_DOC/appdev.816 for Application Development documentation

    • $ORACLE_DOC/network.816 for Networking and Security documentation

    • $ORACLE_DOC/paraserv.816 for Parallel Server documentation

    • $ORACLE_DOC/sqlplus.816 for SQL*Plus documentation

    • $ORACLE_DOC/inter.816 for interMedia, Spatial, Time Series and Visual Information Retrieval documentation

    • $ORACLE_DOC/java.816 for Java documentation

    • $ORACLE_DOC/webdb.816 for WebDB documentation

Note: If you did not install the documentation in ORACLE_DOC, adjust the path accordingly.

So, for example, if you want to view the Oracle8i SQL Reference directly, without using a browser or the index.pdf files, you would first look up the category and part number of the document in the tables earlier in this document. That manual is in the "Server and Data Warehousing" category, and the part number is a76989. So you would then open the /DOC/server.816/a76989.pdf file on your CD, or the corresponding file in your installed documentation.
