2 Installation Issues

This chapter describes installation issues and workarounds associated with Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One. It includes the following topics:

2.1 Harmless Warning Message When Specifying an Invalid Instance Name

During the installation, if you specify an invalid instance name (for example, you entered an instance name with an invalid character), an error message appears immediately, informing you of the problem and asking you to fix the instance name.

As a result of this, a warning message stating that you are installing in a non-empty directory appears when the installation actually begins. This warning is harmless and can be safely ignored.

2.2 Termination of Installation

You may observe termination of the Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One installation process in the following circumstances:

2.2.1 Insufficient ORACLE_HOME Storage Space

Your installation of Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One may terminate due to insufficient ORACLE_HOME storage space. For example:

  1. Launch the Oracle Universal Installer.

  2. Provide the location of the ORACLE_HOME for installation. However, not enough disk space is available in the provided location.

  3. Provide all the required information in the rest of the installation screens that appear.

  4. Start the installation.

  5. An error message appears indicating that not enough space is available for installation of Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One.

  6. If you attempt to further install Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One at this point you will observe an abnormal program termination.

Before installing Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One verify that you have enough space in your ORACLE_HOME location.

2.2.2 Insufficient Installation Storage Space

Your installation of Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One may terminate due to insufficient storage space during installation. For example:

  1. Launch the Oracle Universal Installer.

  2. Provide the location of the ORACLE_HOME for installation. There is enough disk space available in the provided location.

  3. Provide all the required information in the rest of the installation screens that appear.

  4. Start the installation.

  5. Files not applicable to the installation of Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One are copied to the ORACLE_HOME installation location.

  6. A screen will appear requesting the selection of a different ORACLE_HOME location.

Before installing Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One verify your selection of the ORACLE_HOME location.

2.3 Oracle Application Server Companion CD 10g (10.1.2.0.0)

This section describes information pertaining to the Oracle Application Server Companion CD 10g (10.1.2.0.0). It includes the following topics:

2.3.2 Oracle Sensor Edge Server Administrator's Guide

Oracle Sensor Edge Server Administrator's Guide (Part No. B14455-01) in the Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) documentation library is available on OTN (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products).

2.4 Oracle JDeveloper Extensions

Oracle JDeveloper provides a public Java API that allows the product to be extended or customized in virtually any conceivable way. There are many Oracle JDeveloper extensions available for download from OTN (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/partners/addins/exchange/index.html). These include extensions developed by Oracle, as well as by third parties. Of particular interest to Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One users are:

If you wish to learn more about developing your own extension for JDeveloper, please visit the Extension SDK on OTN (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products).

2.5 Installer and Graphical Components Cannot Display Japanese Fonts Properly

The installer and graphical components of Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One on Linux x86 cannot properly display Japanese fonts. For the installer and Oracle Application Server components to display Japanese fonts properly, you must install J2SE 1.4.2_06 (or higher) when it becomes available . Oracle Application Server components need to be configured to use the J2SE 1.4.2_06 installation in place of the existing copy of J2SE included with Oracle Application Server.

To set up the installer to use J2SE 1.4.2_06:

  1. Copy the install /linux/oraparam.ini file from the Oracle Application Server installation media to a directory on your computer.

    Note:

    In this procedure it is assumed that you have copied the oraparam.ini file to the /home/oracle directory.

  2. Make the oraparam.ini file writable:

    $ chmod +w oraparam.ini

  3. Edit the oraparam.ini file by using a text editor.

    1. Locate the following line:

      JRE_LOCATION=../../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.4.1.5.0/1/DataFiles/Expanded

    2. Modify this line to refer to the location where you have installed J2SE 1.4.2_06, for example:

      JRE_LOCATION=/home/oracle/j2re1.4.2_06

Start the installer from the Application Server installation media using the -paramFile option followed by the full directory path to the modified oraparam.ini file, for example to run the installer from CD-ROM, enter:

$ /mount_point/runInstaller -paramFile /home/oracle/oraparam.ini

There is no available workaround or fix for this issue for UnitedLinux at this time.

2.6 Oracle Database 10g (10.1.0.4) Patch Set
